Root Words & Affixes

In SSC and Dakhil exams, you are asked to change the meaning or the Part of Speech of a Root Word by adding letters to the front or back!

An Affix is a letter or group of letters added to the beginning or end of a Root Word (base word).

• Before the word = Prefix
• After the word = Suffix

মূল শব্দের (Root Word) পূর্বে বা পরে যে সকল বর্ণ বা বর্ণসমষ্টি যুক্ত হয়ে নতুন শব্দ গঠন করে, তাদেরকে একত্রে Affix বলে।

• শব্দের আগে বসলে = Prefix (উপসর্গ)
• শব্দের পরে বসলে = Suffix (প্রত্যয়)

How Word Building Works (শব্দ গঠনের নিয়ম):

Notice how the root word "success" (Noun/সাফল্য) changes into "successful" (Adjective/সফল), and then the prefix "un-" makes it negative: "unsuccessful" (অসফল)!

Prefixes sit at the FRONT of a word. In SSC/Dakhil exams, prefixes are mostly used to make the OPPOSITE (Antonym) meaning of a word!

A Prefix is a letter or a group of letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning.

Most common exam prefixes: un-, dis-, in-, im-, ir-, il-, mis-, re-.

যে সকল বর্ণ বা বর্ণসমষ্টি মূল শব্দের পূর্বে বসে নতুন অর্থবোধক শব্দ গঠন করে, তাদেরকে Prefix বলে।

বোর্ড পরীক্ষার টিপস: Prefix সাধারণত শব্দের বিপরীত অর্থ (Opposite word) তৈরি করতে সবচেয়ে বেশি ব্যবহৃত হয়।

Common Prefixes for Opposites (বিপরীত শব্দ তৈরির Prefix):

possible ➡️ impossible

polite ➡️ impolite

take ➡️ mistake

A Suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word to create a new word or change its grammatical function.

Most common exam suffixes: -tion, -ment, -ness, -ful, -less, -ly.

যে সকল বর্ণ বা বর্ণসমষ্টি মূল শব্দের শেষে বসে নতুন অর্থবোধক শব্দ গঠন করে, তাদেরকে Suffix বলে।

How Suffixes Change Parts of Speech (কিভাবে পদ পরিবর্তন হয়):
