A Sentence

A sentence is a group of words arranged in a proper grammatical order that expresses a complete thought, idea, question, command, or emotion.

Ex 1: The sun rises in the east.

বাক্য (Sentence)

এক বা একাধিক অর্থপূর্ণ শব্দ (Word) সুসংবদ্ধভাবে পাশাপাশি বসে যদি বক্তার মনের ভাব সম্পূর্ণরূপে প্রকাশ করে, তবে তাকে Sentence বা বাক্য বলে।

উদাহরণ ১: সূর্য পূর্ব দিকে উদিত হয়। (The sun rises in the east.)

Part 1 / ১ম অংশ 🎯

1. Subject (উদ্দেশ্য)

🇬🇧 English: The person, place, or thing performing the action or being described in the sentence.

🇧🇩 বাংলা: বাক্যে যার সম্বন্ধে বা যাকে উদ্দেশ্য করে কিছু বলা হয়, তাকে Subject বলে।

Ex: Rahim plays cricket. (রহিম ক্রিকেট খেলে।)

Ex: Honesty is the best policy. (সততা সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট পন্থা।)

Part 2 / ২য় অংশ ⚡

2. Predicate (বিধেয়)

🇬🇧 English: The part containing the verb that tells what the subject does, experiences, or is.

🇧🇩 বাংলা: Subject সম্বন্ধে যা কিছু বলা হয়, সেই সম্পূর্ণ অংশকে Predicate বলে।

Ex: Rahim plays cricket. (রহিম ক্রিকেট খেলে।)

Ex: Honesty is the best policy. (সততা সর্বোৎকৃষ্ট পন্থা।)

Direct Object

বস্তুবাচক কর্ম

Answers "what?" (ক্রিয়াকে 'কি' প্রশ্ন করলে পাওয়া যায়)। Usually a thing.

He gave me a pen.

Indirect Object

ব্যক্তিবাচক কর্ম

Answers "to whom?" (ক্রিয়াকে 'কাকে' প্রশ্ন করলে পাওয়া যায়)। Usually a person.

5 Sentence Types (NCTB Board + Oxford Usage)

In Bangladeshi English grammar, sentences are classified into 5 types according to meaning. Each type is shown below in a detailed single-row layout with formulas, rules, and audio examples!

Type 1 / ১ম প্রকার

1. Assertive / Declarative Sentence (বর্ণনামূলক বাক্য)

Punctuation: Ends with Full Stop (.)

An Assertive sentence makes a statement, states a fact, describes an event, or expresses an opinion. It can be Affirmative (Positive) or Negative.

Formula: Subject + Verb + Object/Extension + (.)

যে বাক্য দ্বারা কোনো সাধারণ বর্ণনা, বিবৃতি বা সত্য ঘটনা প্রকাশ পায়, তাকে Assertive Sentence বা বর্ণনামূলক বাক্য বলে। এটি হ্যাঁ-বোধক (Affirmative) বা না-বোধক (Negative) হতে পারে।

Type 2 / ২য় প্রকার

2. Interrogative Sentence (প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য)

Punctuation: Ends with Question Mark (?)

🇬🇧 Oxford English Explanation:

An Interrogative sentence asks a question to gather information or confirmation. It starts with an Auxiliary Verb (Yes/No Question) or WH-word (Information Question).

Formulas:
1. Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb...?
2. WH-Word + Auxiliary Verb + Subject + Main Verb...?

যে বাক্য দ্বারা কোনো কিছু জানতে চাওয়া হয় বা প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করা হয়, তাকে Interrogative Sentence বা প্রশ্নবোধক বাক্য বলে। বাক্যের শেষে অবশ্যই প্রশ্নবোধক চিহ্ন (?) বসে।

3. Imperative Sentence (অনুজ্ঞাসূচক বাক্য)

Punctuation: Ends with Full Stop (.)

An Imperative sentence gives a command, request, instruction, warning, or advice. The subject 'You' is almost always invisible (understood).

Formula: (You) + Verb (Base form) + Object + (.)
Or: Please/Kindly + Verb... / Let + Object...

যে বাক্য দ্বারা কোনো আদেশ, উপদেশ, অনুরোধ, প্রস্তাব বা নিষেধ প্রকাশ পায়, তাকে Imperative Sentence বা অনুজ্ঞাসূচক বাক্য বলে। এতে সাধারণত Subject 'You' উহ্য (hidden) থাকে।

4. Optative Sentence (ইচ্ছাসূচক বা প্রার্থনামূলক বাক্য)

Punctuation: Ends with Full Stop (.)

🇬🇧 Oxford / Traditional English Explanation:

An Optative sentence expresses a wish, desire, or prayer for someone's well-being or success. It typically begins with "May" or "Long live".

Formula: May + Subject + Verb + Extension + (.)
Or: Long live + Subject + (.)

যে বাক্য দ্বারা মনের ইচ্ছা, আকাক্সক্ষা বা শুভ প্রার্থনা প্রকাশ পায়, তাকে Optative Sentence বা ইচ্ছাসূচক বাক্য বলে। এটি বাংলাদেশ বোর্ডের এসএসসি ও এইচএসসি পরীক্ষার প্রিয় একটি বিষয়।

5. Exclamatory Sentence (বিস্ময়সূচক বাক্য)

Punctuation: Ends with Exclamation Mark (!)

An Exclamatory sentence conveys strong, sudden feelings or emotions such as surprise, delight, sadness, or shock. It uses 'What a/an', 'How', or interjections (Hurrah, Alas).

Formulas:
1. How + Adjective + Subject + Verb...!
2. What a/an + Adjective + Noun + Subject + Verb...!

⚡ What is a Clause? (Clause বা খণ্ডবাক্য কাকে বলে?)

A clause is a group of words that contains a Subject and a Finite Verb, forming part of a sentence.

1. Independent Clause

Principal Clause (প্রধান খণ্ডবাক্য)

🇬🇧 Oxford: Can stand alone as a complete sentence.

🇧🇩 NCTB: যে Clause স্বাধীনভাবে নিজের অর্থ সম্পূর্ণ প্রকাশ করতে পারে।

Ex: I know the man who came here.

2. Dependent Clause

Subordinate Clause (আশ্রিত খণ্ডবাক্য)

🇬🇧 Oxford: Cannot stand alone. Depends on Principal Clause.

🇧🇩 NCTB: নিজের অর্থ প্রকাশের জন্য Principal Clause এর উপর নির্ভর করে।

Ex: I know the man who came here.

3. Co-ordinating Clause

Co-ordinate Clause (সহ-খণ্ডবাক্য)

🇬🇧 Oxford: Two independent clauses joined by FANBOYS conjunctions.

🇧🇩 NCTB: সমক্ষমতাসম্পন্ন দুই বা ততোধিক Clause সংযোজক অব্যয় দিয়ে যুক্ত হয়।

Ex: He worked hard and he succeeded.

1. Simple Sentence (সরল বাক্য)

Formula: 1 Subject + 1 Finite Verb

🇬🇧 Oxford English Explanation:

A Simple sentence consists of only one independent (principal) clause. It has one subject and one finite verb, making it direct and easy to read.

Key Indicators: In spite of, Despite, Because of, By + verb-ing, To + verb.

যে বাক্যে একটিমাত্র Subject (উদ্দেশ্য) এবং একটিমাত্র Finite Verb (সমাপিকা ক্রিয়া) থাকে, তাকে Simple Sentence বা সরল বাক্য বলে।

2. Complex Sentence (জটিল বা মিশ্র বাক্য)

Formula: 1 Principal Clause + 1+ Subordinate Clause

🇬🇧 Oxford English Explanation:

A Complex sentence has one independent clause and at least one dependent (subordinate) clause connected by subordinating conjunctions.

Key Connectors: Since, As, Because, Though, Although, If, Unless, So that, When, Who, Which, That.

যে বাক্যে একটি প্রধান খণ্ডবাক্য (Principal Clause) এবং এক বা একাধিক আশ্রিত খণ্ডবাক্য (Subordinate Clause) থাকে, তাকে Complex Sentence বলে।

3. Compound Sentence (যৌগিক বাক্য)

Formula: 2+ Principal Clauses + FANBOYS Conjunction

🇬🇧 Oxford English Explanation:

A Compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses of equal rank joined by co-ordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS: For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So).
